Raise YOUR Voice for the Houston Public Library

Prevent the Elimination of the National Endowment for the Humanities

The recently proposed federal budget for the 2018 fiscal year included cuts and eliminations of funding to arts and humanities programs, including the National Endowment for the Arts (NEA), National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH), which supports Library funding, and the Corporation for Public Broadcasting (CPB), which funds PBS and NPR.

The combined cost for these programs is less than 0.02% of a roughly $4 trillion federal budget, a total of about $745 million.

Library programs play a vital role in American culture and our culture here in Houston, providing resources and programs to the most diverse and the 4th largest city in the nation, supporting Houstonians through resources, education, guidance and enriching and inclusive programming and initiatives.

While the arts and humanities may seem like a luxury, the arts and humanities, especially libraries propel every citizen and Houstonian regardless of zip code, or socioeconomic status, to reach their fullest potential in safe and vibrant spaces.

If funding for these programs is eliminated, not only will it change the breadth and scope of programming on a national and local level, it will send a message that we are not investing in the future of our country, our city, or our families.

Please call or write your state representative and raise your voice for your Houston Public Library!

Hi, my name is [NAME] and I’m a constituent from Houston.

I’m calling to take a stand against the proposed federal budget’s elimination of funding for the National Endowment for the Humanities, National Endowment for the Arts, and the Corporation for Public Broadcasting. The total cost of these programs is nominal compared to the entire federal budget, yet through this nominal investment, these institutions deliver a wealth of resources, programming, art, culture, education, and they bring purpose and joy to our communities. My library has made a difference in my life by [SHARE YOUR LIBRARY STORY] and I know you care about your constituents and their families, and most importantly investing in their ability to pursue the American Dream.

Thank you for your time and attention.
