Sally Swanson

Sally Swanson

Executive Director

Sally joined the Foundation in 2016 and is establishing effective business processes and diversified fundraising practices in collaboration with an engaged board of directors. Sally has been a nonprofit development director for over fifteen years and has conducted multi-million dollar campaigns. Sally spearheads the Foundation’s strategic planning efforts and is out in the community matching donors to library programs.

Sally received a BA in Communication from the University of Houston, and her post-baccalaureate studies have focused on statistical analysis, which have led to developing campaign analytics and outcome methodologies. Sally has served on nonprofit boards since 2001. In 2017, she became The Woman’s Club of Houston’s co-chair of the Program Committee. Sally is a fan of the Original Nancy Drew Series and can be found channeling her inner Nancy Drew when searching for solutions to meet our mission in new and innovative ways. When she’s not working, Sally enjoys scuba diving with her husband, spending time with her daughter Amanda and son Andrew, and her other children, Xena and Waffle the dogs and her cat Numa.

Rose Hinojosa

Marketing & Events Director

Rose joined the Foundation in 2015 and is establishing outreach and marketing efforts that create engaging experiences for new and existing supporters, so that they may be empowered to be a part of the Foundation’s mission. Rose manages Foundation events, the Friends of HPL program, works with community partners and volunteers, and maintains the Foundation and Friends of HPL brands — whether it’s online, in print or in person. Rose has experience in for-profit, non-profit and agency settings, and has been leading digital, creative, outreach, and social media strategies for 10 years.

Rose received a BA in Communication from the University of Houston, and is a member of the Association of Fundraising Professionals and the Young Professionals Group of the Barbara Bush Houston Literacy Foundation. Rose’s favorite book is 7 Habits of Highly Effective People by Stephen Covey, is a nonfiction nerd and regularly quotes Brené Brown, Stephen Covey and Dale Carnegie. When she’s not at work, she enjoys planning ahead (in three year increments), spending time with her fiancé, and taking too many pictures of her lazy, but very cute, dachshund, Bruno.

Sarah Suarez

Development Manager

Sarah joined the Foundation in September of 2017 and is excited to bring her stewardship and donor relations experience to the team. She has more than seven years of nonprofit development experience, and has worked at the Houston Humane Society, the Museum of Fine Arts Houston, and South Texas College of Law Houston. Sarah is passionate about donor engagement and finding meaningful and personalized ways to convey donor impact.

Sarah likes to spend her spare time going to museums and parks with her husband and daughter. Her 12-year-old Boston Terrier, Bean, is a central part of her life since he is the current boss of her home, though her 19-month-old daughter is making a push to take the throne. Sarah’s favorite book is Love in the Time of Cholera and she is a chocoholic.

Avis McCray

Philanthropy Coordinator

Avis McCray joined the Foundation in the beginnings of 2017 and hit the ground running in preparation for our inaugural Beyond the Page Luncheon. Avis has over 20 years of experience in nonprofit work, including Raiser’s Edge. We like to tout her as having a Doctorate in RE. Avis’s goal is to connect us to donors that match our mission. Through donor prospecting, research and streamlining our systems, Avis keeps the office running and our outreach efforts on target.

Avis attended the University of Phoenix where she studied Human Services Management, and she is a member of the Greater Houston Partnership.  When she’s not at work, Avis is spending time with her two wonderful sons Jeremy and Brandon and her sweet schnauzer, Andy.

Anthony Barilla

Volunteer and Warehouse Coordinator

Anthony Barilla is a musician, writer, and performance artist. He has decades of nonprofit experience, including helping to lead Infernal Bridegroom Productions, a nationally respected theater company, and providing administrative support for the Mitrovica Rock School, a music school for youth in Kosovo.

He has written music for bands and theaters around the U.S. and regularly creates compositions for the national radio program This American Life. As an avid reader and supporter of libraries everywhere, he is very happy to be contributing to the Foundation’s mission. everywhere, he is very happy to be contributing to the Foundation’s mission.
